Paths of Glory
-
Bart Gets An F (7F03):
Bart will fail school unless he passes one last test.
- After much studying (with the help of Martin Prince) Bart finally
begins to pray. Lisa witnesses this and exclaims, "Prayer, the last refuge
of a scoundrel." In Paths of Glory, Kirk Douglas retorts, "Patriotism, the
last refuge of a scoundrel."
Dr. Strangelove
or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the
Bomb
-
$pringfield (or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized
Gambling) (1F08):
When the local economy stalls, everyone, including Marge, votes to
legalize gambling in Springfield.
- The Strangelovian title is really the only Kubrick-related reference in
this episode.
-
Homer the Vigilante (1F09):
When a cat burglar hits Springfield, Homer vows to fight back.
- In one scene, Homer imagines himself riding a bomb from a B-52 bomber,
an obvious but delightful parody of Slim Pickens' bomb ride.
-
Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming (3F08):
Sideshow Bob slips away from prison detail, steals an atomic bomb and
threatens to detonate it unless the town of Springfield gives up
television.
- Military officials discuss the matter with various members of the media in
an underground bomb shelter modeled after the War Room of Dr.
Strangelove.

2001: A Space Odyssey
-
Deep Space Homer (1F13):
After seeing their ratings decline, NASA decides to send Joe Average to
space. In this case, Joe Average is Homer Simpson.
- There are tons of 2001 references here. One memorable scene: After
releasing potato chips in the space shuttle, Homer attempts to collect the
chips before they "clog the instruments." The Blue Danube Waltz begins, and
Homer floats in circles, collecting chips in his mouth.
- Another scene: Homer is shown as Starchild while Thus Spake Zarathustra
plays.
-
Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes? (8F23):
Herbert Powell (Homer's half-brother) returns and asks the Simpsons for
help with an invention idea of his, using the money Homer received from the
nuclear plant for some bogus award.
- Near the beginning of the episode, Homer tries out the Spine-Master
2000, a vibrating chair in a furniture store. As the vibration increases,
there's a close-up of Homer's eyes, and the colors of the scene change every
time he blinks.
A Clockwork Orange
-
Homer the Smithers (3F14):
- At the end of this episode, after Burns becomes self-reliant and
reliant again, Smithers feeds bed-ridden Burns, mirroring Alex's feeding at
the end of A Clockwork Orange.
-
Dog of Death (8F17):
When Santa's Little Helper (the Simpsons' dog) suffers from a twisted
stomach, the Simpsons sacrifice in order to pay for a life-saving operation.
However, when the family's morale suffers from the cuts, the dog runs away
and quickly becomes one of Mr. Burns' hounds.
- During his guard dog training, Santa's Little Helper is subjected to the
Ludovico Treatment. With eyes held back in clamps, SLH is forced to watch
dogs getting kicked, heads slammed in toilets, etc.
-
A Streetcar Named Marge (8F18):
Marge gets a role in a musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire, "Oh,
Streetcar."
- On the night before the performance, Marge begins speaking in a
Southern accent to get into character. To help out, Bart speaks in an
Alexesque English accent. During dinner he asks Homer, "Can I skip school
tomorrow? Got a pain in me gulliver."
-
Treehouse of Horror III (9F04):
The Simpsons hold a Halloween party, in which three stories are
exchanged.
- During the party, Bart is dressed as Alex.
- At the beginning of the episode, Bart, in a decent Malcolm McDowell
accent, is heard to remark, "Stupid party, wish we was trick-or-treatin'."
-
Duffless (9F14):
After her science project is ruined by Bart, Lisa creates a new
experiment, "Is my brother smarter than a hamster" (or something like that).
Using electric shocks, cupcakes (for Bart), and hamster food (for the
hamster), Lisa finds her answer.
- After much exposure to the treatment, Bart becomes sickened by cupcakes.
In one scene, he kneels in front of two strategically placed cupcakes,
reflecting the review of Alex's Ludovico treatment as he crouches in front
of a naked woman.
The Shining
-
The Simpsons Halloween Special (a.k.a. Treehouse of Horror)
(7F04):
Bart and Lisa swap horror stories in their tree house. In
"Bad Dream House" the Simpsons move into a haunted house, complete with
a dimensional vortex, bleeding walls, and an Indian burial ground.
- I can't really remember this episode too well, but I seem to recall some
Shining parodies. Perhaps some blood flowing through the halls.
-
Treehouse of Horror V (a.k.a. The Simpsons Halloween Special V)
(2F03):
In a parody of Outer Limits, the Simpsons present tales of
horror...
- "The Shinning": No TV and no beer makes Homer go insane at an isolated
mountain lodge and only Bart's shinning ("Don't you mean shining?" "D'you
want ta get *sued*?!") can save the family. The entire story is a big parody
of The Shining. Very funny.
-
"Who Needs The Quickie Mart?" episode:
Apu gets fired from his job and has to live with the Simpsons for a
while.
- Abu and Marge do their grocery shopping at the supermarket, where Barney
causes a tidal wave of cranberry juice, in reference to the tidal wave of
blood coming out of the elevator in "The Shining".

Full Metal Jacket
-
Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming (3F08):
Sideshow Bob slips away from prison detail, steals an atomic bomb and
threatens to detonate it unless the town of Springfield gives up
television.
- Col. Hapablap sounds identical to Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, and he should,
since they're both played by R. Lee Ermey.
- see also: Dr. Strangelove
-
Dead Putting Society (7F08):
As an excuse to compete with Flanders, Homer enters Bart into a miniature
golf tournament against Todd Flanders.
-
As part of his training, Homer forces Bart to name his putter. After several
of Bart's original titles (Mr. Putter, Mom) Homer names the putter Charlene.
-
Bart the General (7G05):
When Bart gets beat up by the school bully for defending Lisa, he
organizes his friends to go after the bully.
- The montage of Army chants is a delightful Full Metal Jacket parody.
Miscellaneous
-
Bart on the Road (3F17):
After printing a fake I.D. while spending a day at the DMV with Patty
and Selma, Bart and friends rent a car and take a road trip across the
U.S.
- In one scene, the group watches an Andy Williams concert. The marquee
reads: "Andy Williams 'He's still got it.' --Look Magazine". This now
defunct magazine was Kubrick's first job after leaving high school. However,
I doubt Kubrick was the intent of this joke.
